About

Culture & Mental Health Counseling

Cultural Psychology and Cross Cultural Psychological researchers have been doing scientific research for decades.  There are multiple scientific journals that have produced mountains of evidence that in a nutshell say, treatments from other cultures work and they work well.  Cultural psychology recognizes that there are different epistemologies (ways of knowing).  Many cultures have been refining their research for countless generations.  We are moving psychology forward by presenting other cultural healing ways and room for other cultural traditions and or understandings in conjunction with conventional mental health counseling.  This style of treatment has the research to back it up.

We take evidence based therapies and adapt them to the culture and religion/spirituality of the client.  This way therapy makes sense.  You don't have to change yourself to heal.

Treatment Origins

This treatment approach is a blend of conventional psychology as well as the visionary work of Lipan, Apache, Stalking Wolf.  The purpose of this blend is to provide more cultural diverse technologies in mental health counseling.  Stalking Wolf did the unknown and mastered his culture's spiritual lineage by the age of 20.  He then set out on a 63 year journey where he traveled North, Central, and South America by foot.  He shared and traded skills with other tribes and at the time, new settlers. Through this long journey he noticed the common threads that bound many of the tools he had learned on his travels.  He stripped the tools down to their common and essential threads.  Stalking Wolf would be considered a form of scientist because of his deep and complete refinement of skills that had already been refined for generations.  Essentially, what was left was a huge set of highly adaptable tools that can be used for nearly every culture, circumstance, or life issue.

Folks from Hawaiian and Polynesian culture will quickly recognize a space for their cutlure and faith/spirituality. Folks from other cultures, faiths, and spiritualities will also see space for them to utilize these tools without having to change or alter their cultural background.

Growing up, I went through some difficulties that left me dealing with symptoms of PTSD.  I suddenly found myself in need of help and no cultural practitioner to help me.  This was before the advent of the internet so, I had to move many miles back home to get the help I needed.  After getting fixed up by my cultural practitioners I decided to go back to school and study mental health counseling so there would be more culturally derived treatments available.  What came from this venture was a set of ancient culturally derived tools that span across cultures and faiths.

Because of Stalking Wolf's unique life path, his teachings do not represent traditional Lipan culture or traditions. However, the Lipan have given their blessing to his lineage as its own unique gift to the the world.  Stalking Wolf's lineage has also given their blessing for these teachings to be passed in this way, with many thanks to Tom Brown Jr. and Malcolm Ringwalt.  It should also be known that these teachings have been adapted to the various programs or counseling/coaching and this should not be considered traditional.  If you seek to learn the clinical adaptations and the traditional format, please visit our sister organization

Molokai Mental Health

Molokai Mental Health is a strong believer that mental health counseling should be as diverse as people. Stalking Wolf's legacy has left behind therapeutic tools that bridge across cultures and maintain values found in nearly every culture.  We have taken the fabric of this legacy and adapted it to a clinical setting.  We have also put together two methods to get help.  You can virtually attend a program so folks can 'save-face' and learn the tools. Or you can get personal, couples, or ohana counseling either in-person or via tele-health.

Mental health counseling is only available to residents and visitors of Washington State or Hawaii.  Many insurances accepted: AlohaCare, HMSA, Blue Shield/Cross of...

For those out of state and out of country we offer Life Coaching.  This service is for those without a mental illness and seeking some tools and direction for a life issue.  If you do have a mental illness or medical need, you are required to see a local professional in you area if getting Life Coaching.

Regardless, come prepared with the courage to heal.  We are often accepting new clients, please contact us.

The Therapeutic Tools

Each program empowers a local community value and or strives to meet a common community need.  The therapeutic tools we learn, encourage us to incorporate our religion, culture, and or spirituality into the healing process.  We shouldn't feel like someone is trying to change who we are in counseling.  It should feel like we are becoming empowered to be who we really are.  These life skills provide us empowerment to live our life from our heart with great efficacy and kindness.  The same therapeutic tools taught in the programs can also be taught in personal counseling.

Are you concerned about saving-face, we've got you covered.
